Vogel converted to Islam in 2001 and shortly thereafter began courses on Islamic studies in Germany.[4] For two years he studied Arabic and the Quran at the private school Om Al-Qura[5] in Mecca.

In 2006 he returned to Berlin and started teaching Islam at the Al-Nur-Moschee mosque Neukölln, in universities and even amongst Christian congregations.

Boxing career

In his youth Vogel took up boxing, becoming junior champion of Germany. After 66 amateur fights he turned professional at the age of 22, fighting as a cruiserweight[6] for the Sauerland club and was undefeated in seven bouts.

Private Life

Vogel is married to a Muslim Moroccan woman and is father of three children.[7]

Media Perception

The German mainstream media describe him as a radical Muslim.[8]

When he appeared at a Muslim Ferihegy, he said that polygamy is legitim due to the fact that there are more women than men in Germany.[9]
